so basiclly a long time ago he stole esavs title for the first born and esav wanted to kill him despretly. he was afraid that he would succeed and kill him so he didnt go back. he came to the land of israel and met lavan. lavan is basically a dirty liar and he always changes his descisson at the last second. an example of it was when yakov was promised rachel but he actually was “promised” laeh because when lavan said rachel is too presious to me he said take laeh. now yakov wanted rachel but he couldnt. another time was when he was prommised some spotted sheep, he hid them and gave them to his sons. yakov took care of the sheep and i dont think he noticed because it didnt say in the midrash but he knew that lavan was lying but still worked for him because he was  in an agreement. he worked for 7 years
